Charles E. Rivers Jr. of Swarthmore, formerly of Springfield, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Gainesville, Florida on December 22, 2014.

Charles was born in East Orange, New Jersey. He attended the University of Delaware. After two years of school he left to serve in the Army during World War II. During his service, he was wounded in Germany. Upon return from the war he was awarded the Purple Heart. He proudly completed his education at Delaware, earning a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Charles worked as an Engineer for GE and later for the U.S. Government at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and the Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst. He was an avid golfer, belonging to Springfield Country Club and then Rolling Green Golf Club. He and wife, Gloria, made life-long friends on the golf course and enjoyed traveling to golf destinations. Since retiring at age 59, Charles took up painting and chip carving, hobbies he enjoyed through his final days. He also looked forward to his Tuesday lunch and Bridge games with friends at the Club. His family lovingly remembers his knack for conversation and his words of wisdom will be missed by all.

He is predeceased by his loving wife, Gloria, and daughter, Pastor Carolyn Segich. He is survived by his daughters Linda Haney (Hugh) and Debbie Martino (Donato), seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass on Friday January 2, 2015 at 10:00am at St. Rose of Lima, 1901 Chester Pike, Eddystone, Pa, 19022. Mass will be followed by his interment at Veteran’s Cemetery in Bear, Delaware at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Swarthmore Public Library at 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania 19081. Arrangements by Bateman-Allen Funeral Home, Brookhaven, Pa, 19015.
